Recrystallized silicon carbide and its application
Recrystallized silicon carbide (R-SiC) is a material with extremely high thermal stability, mechanical strength and chemical corrosion resistance that makes it a perfect candidate for a range of applications. It will transform manufacturing processes and trigger broader industry upgrades, catapulting the world into a new age of efficiency, sustainability and innovation.
A method of making R-SiC includes forming a castable slip from a finely ground silicon carbide powder having a bimodal distribution of particles and adding water or a water miscible curable resin to form the shaped body. Preferably, the cast and the mold are heat-treated to increase the strength of the green form. Then the cast is dipped in boiling hydrochloric acid to break down the phenolic resin, permitting the mold to be removed from the set green casting. The resulting is then recrystallized and siliconized to react any residual phenolic resin and to increase the density of the resulting product .
Chemical Process Equipment Conventional metal and ceramic materials are often destroyed by hot and corrosive conditions in the chemical industry that lead to breakdown and equipment failure. R-SiC with good chemical and temperature resistance is a preferred material for lining chemical reactors. It is highly hard and durable, which can resist the abrasive conditions of the environment. Thus, the life of the reactor can be extended significantly and maintenance costs can be reduced.
Also R-SiC can be employed in pipes and containers for transportation of corrosive liquids. It has an excellent chemical corrosion resistance which ensures that the fluid will not leak or contaminate surrounding environment. This greatly increases the pipeline lifespan and decreases maintenance costs. R-SiC is also an ideal material for pumps and valves, where parts often come into contact with highly corrosive liquids.
For Electronic Devices, the high temperature resistance and 10 times higher breakdown voltage than silicon make SiC usable in a wide range of devices. The robustness of SiC enables these devices to operate reliably in extreme environments, from mobile communication base stations and satellite transmissions to radar systems and military equipment.
R-SiC’s very high thermal stability makes it a perfect material for semiconductor and electronics fabrication. Recrystallized sic used in wafer fabrication, IC packaging and thermal processing operations improves equipment reliability, increases production efficiency and improves equipment performance overall. Its increased hardness and mechanical strength further enable it to withstand severe machining conditions, which decreases the wear and tear of the equipment. Also recrystallized silicon carbide is highly electrically conductive, which leads to the improvement of power device efficiency and acceleration of response time. Its high-breaking down voltage is required to allow electronic devices to withstand high electric fields and to operate at high temperatures. It is particularly suitable for high-power amplifiers so that they can operate efficiently at higher frequencies and power levels. Recrystallized sic can be combined with other advanced materials technologies to create new innovative composites, which expands its application scenario further. This may include graphene and carbon fiber composites, which can improve equipment stability, mechanical strength and abrasion resistance. These innovative combinations can lead to breakthrough advances across a variety of industries, from aerospace to smart manufacturing.
